Urgent letter to the Prime Minister, in response to the recent far-right attacks across the UK.

19th August 2024

Today (19 August 2024), Imkaan sent an urgent letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, urging immediate action to safeguard Muslim, migrant, Black and minoritised women and girls. This letter has been co-signed by 38 other organisations from across the VAWG and race equality sectors.

A summary of our key asks, alongside the complete letter, can be found below.

UPDATE: We have now received a response from the Home Office to our letter, which can be viewed [here]. While the reply does not fully address our key concerns, we are actively following up to ensure more substantial discussions take place and that more meaningful actions are taken in response to our letter, and on this critical issue in general.

We have rallied to send a critical letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, demanding urgent action in response to the recent wave of far-right, racist, and Islamophobic violence in the UK. This violence has been fuelled by a dangerous mix of extremist rhetoric and systemic neglect, leading to attacks on Black and minoritised communities. Recent tragedies have led to innocent lives lost, the safety of countless individuals being threatened and jeopardised, and a climate of fear and instability.

While it is positive news that the government has denounced the violent disorder, rioting, criminal damage, and incitement to racial hatred, Imkaan believes that this response falls far short of addressing the real damage inflicted on our communities.

The mental, emotional, and physical harm caused by these and similar events across the country demands far more comprehensive action. It is crucial that the government not only take a strong stand now but also sustain this effort to protect, repair, and truly support our communities.

We are under no illusion that the racist, prejudiced threat to our members, families, and communities has disappeared. While the immediate riots may have subsided for now, the underlying issues remain. The government must demonstrate a clear and ongoing commitment to listening to our concerns, addressing the rise in hate that our communities and allies have been forced to confront on their own, and taking decisive action to safeguard our communities for the long term.

We have called on the Prime Minister, along with the Home Secretary, the Minister for Safeguarding, and other key ministers, to take decisive steps to address these urgent issues and protect our communities.

The need for immediate action

  • Current Crisis: The recent surge in far-right violence is directly threatening the safety and well-being of Black and minoritised women and girls.

  • Historical Context: Systemic racism and Islamophobia have been exacerbated by years of neglect and disinformation, worsening the current situation.

  • Long-Term Consequences: The escalating violence and targeted attacks are causing severe mental and emotional distress, exacerbating existing trauma and destabilising our communities, which could have lasting repercussions for those affected.

What we want to see

  • Immediate Government Response: Recall Parliament to address these attacks and properly condemn the violence as Islamophobic.

  • Enhanced Safety Measures: Implement emergency funding for by-and-for services and protection for Black and minoritised women and girls.

  • Tackling Systemic Issues: Address institutional racism and reform policies that contribute to the hostile environment.
