What we do

Imkaan’s Policy work focuses on violence against Black and minoritised women and girls and the regression and violation of their human rights amidst structural and systemic inequalities.  We use a Black feminist intersectional framework to examine the impact of policy measures on Black and minoritised women and girls- particularly those that cause further harm and inequity. Through a close examination of emerging policy directives, our work analyses and deconstructs social policy in order to remedy the issues and imposed barriers facing Imkaan Member Organisations and Black and minoritised women and girls. This includes the racist dehumanisation of migrant women and girls and the widescale violence, abuse, discrimination, and exclusion that Black and minoritised women experience from multiple perpetrators, institutions, and the state.

"If we aren’t intersectional, some of us, the most vulnerable, are going to fall through the cracks." Kimberlé Crenshaw

Our Approach

Imkaan’s policy work has a grassroots approach to policy making that centres movement building and is grounded in a Black Feminist collectivist tradition of organising, campaigning, and activism. In our everyday work we reference and look to the generations of Black Feminist sisters who have brought Black and minoritised women and girls from the margin to the centre and fought for our rights. As Global Majority women we are internationally connected in our struggle to end male, institutional, and state violence against women and girls.

We want policy to be accessible and useful, to be driven by and for Black and minoritised women and our member organisations. We have a regional focus that looks to support the very specific local needs of Black and minoritised women and girls in smaller towns and rural areas as well as those in major cities. In our discussion of Black and minoritised women and girls we are inclusive of all women who face interlocking forms of oppression. Our policy work is local, regional, national, and international.

We want no less than transformational change.

Our Policy Themes

Upcoming events.

Throughout 2021-2022 we will be delivering a series of workshops, live briefings, seminars and events to consult with Black and minoritised women and girls and Imkaan members about the key policy concerns and issues that they face. This will be part of our Movement Building work bringing marginalised voices to the centre of policy work, strategic influence and strategy.

Update

We are also currently developing a number of resources for Imkaan member organisations, Black and minoritised women and for the wider public, which we will be sharing soon and will be programming a number of workshops, events and seminars from September 2021
